Hosted by POST + Kelly Malone Martin, founder of WorkshopSF & WorkshopPGH
We are so very excited to welcome Kelly into the POST studio. She is a fellow artist/maker running Workshop - a very similar style business with locations in San Francisco and Pittsburgh. Kelly will be teaching 3 workshops, in 3 days as well as doing a featured trunk show in the shop.
Saturday, February 22nd from 1pm to 4pm
Ever see that stunning blue indigo work that makes you want to say it's Tie Dye but you know it's just too amazing to call it that? It's the beautiful and ancient Japanese resist-dyeing technique known as Shibori.
During this hands-on dye workshop, you will learn the basics of creating an indigo dye bath using pre-reduced indigo crystals and Shibori resistance techniques used to create stunning patterns and designs to dye fabric. Each piece will be unique and unexpected. We'll use four different patterns/styles, so you’ll learn several methods including Kumo, Itajime and Arashi (our favorite). You will use pipes, binder clips, wood, mason jar lids, and a slew of cool simple tools. This class can be messy, so ditch the fancy pants and nice shoes. Aprons will be provided!
In this workshop, you will receive:
- 3 cotton tea towels
- One cotton bandana
- An organic, recycled cotton roll hem scarf (or fabric to use for whatever you like)
- Small zine with pointers, tips & resources to take home
Supplies needed: None but you are welcome to bring one small 100% cotton item to dye in class (tee shirt, pillowcase, tightie whities, etc) You will take things home lightly rinsed in a baggie, but you will need to rinse things again and let dry once you get home.
