Hosted by POST + Kayla Powers, of Salt Textile Studios
Saturday December 14th from 2pm to 5pm
Uncover the possibilities growing in your own backyard!
In this 3 hour hands-on workshop, each participant will learn about preparing fibers, processing seasonal Michigan derived materials and creating dyes for a botanical swatch book. Kayla will go over different dyeing properties and techniques gathered from her personal, in depth explorations with ethically and locally foraged plants, flowers, roots and seeds. With that information in mind, everyone will have a chance to dye a cotton bandanna of their own to take home, gift as a thoughtful kerchief or to use as sustainable gift wrap!
Each student will leave with a new appreciation for Michigan flora, the knowledge and skills to dye fabric and yarn, a swatch book and a naturally dyed cotton bandanna.
About the Instructor
Kayla Powers is a weaver and natural dyer living and working in Detroit, Michigan. Her work is focused on local, natural color from plants that Kayla forages from around the city. She is inspired by the limitations of a seasonal palette and the utilitarian nature of woven cloth.
