Hosted by POST + Wayne Maki, of Mutual Adoration
Two Wednesday evenings:
April 8th and April 15th from 6pm to 9pm
During this 2 part, 6 hour workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of woodworking including shop safety, proper material selection, and safe operation of tools. Wayne will cover special considerations when working with reclaimed wood. Planned with the total beginner in mind, this project will take you through the basic and safe operation of a table saw, miter saw, dado blades, gluing and clamping techniques, sanding and staining.
Using reclaimed wood, students will make + take a handsome sliding lid box, with mitered corners and walnut splines that are both functional and decorative. Each student will be able to choose the size of their box.
Session 1: Choose and plan your box, mark and measure for lid/bottom placement. Rip down pieces on the table saw, and cut your edges to 45 degrees. Using a dado blade, we’ll create grooves for holding your bottom and lid. Light sanding, and applying stain or oil to the inside of your box. Glue and clamp the box together.
Session 2: Using a custom made jig, cut slots for the walnut splines, and glue them in. Sand the exterior smooth, and apply stain or finishing oil.
Please note: All participants must wear closed toe shoes for this workshop. Refrain from wearing any clothing with fringe, hood strings, baggy long sleeves, or anything that hangs or dangles. Be mindful to tie up long hair and tuck away your jewelry. Aprons and eye protection will be provided.
