Hosted by POST + Kelly Malone Martin
We are so very excited to welcome Kelly back into the POST studio! She is a fellow artist/maker and founder of WorkshopSF + WorkshopPGH. Kelly will be teaching a variety of workshops while visiting Detroit during this weekend in April.
Thursday, April 23rd from 6pm to 9pm
Learn the traditional craft of punch needle, where loops of yarn are created by punching the needle down through the fabric in a repetitive motion. Embroidery meets rug hooking to create one of a kind art. Seems easy & old school, huh? Well, it is! We like to think of it as painting with yarn. This fiber craft dates back to the 1880’s but is experiencing a resurgence in popularity with modern motifs and applications.
During this make + take workshop, you will learn how to complete a project from start to finish, including material selection, supplies review, design transfer, punch needle technique and options for finishing your piece. Each student will design their own unique canvas and have a wide array of colorful yarns to complete the design. Punch needle is a fun and meditative craft that can be turned into wall art, cushions, pillows, rugs, purses… just about anything made with a textile! Ideal technique for illustrators, artists and fiber artists to step into a new medium. This truly is an easy craft that you can do anywhere.
All tools and supplies are included! Everyone will receive a 12 x12 inch handmade wood frame with Monks Cloth already stretched and stapled, one Amy Oxford punch needle, and plenty of yarn for use in class and a bit to take home if you don't finish.
