Hosted by POST + Patrick Barber
Thursday November 8th from 6 to 9pm
Get ready to write out those holiday cards, place settings, invitations, and love letters! We'll serve up some snacks and open some wine while Patrick schools you in the art of classic calligraphy.
This workshop will introduce you to traditional calligraphy and the ways of the broad-nib pen. We’ll use blackletter, a classic and modular script, as an easily accessible entry point into the infinite artistry of calligraphy. We’ll spend some time learning basic pen strokes, and how to build letterforms.
An open studio session follows, where you will have the opportunity to continue your practice, or try your hand on writing a favorite quote or phrase using your newfound skills. All materials, including a high-quality cartridge calligraphy pen, are provided. Everyone will take home worksheets, an informative handout, and cards and envelopes for showing off your new skills. Please bring a quote or phrase that you'd like to write in calligraphy. Be sure to wear paint-friendly clothing that can survive an ink-stain or two.
About the instructor:
Patrick Barber is an art director, book designer, and lifelong lover of calligraphy and letterforms. His first design gigs were as a tween calligrapher creating menus and invitations. The lure of typography soon eclipsed the appeal of the broad nib in a professional context, but his love of making his own letters never died. Formerly of Portland, Oregon, and points west, Patrick now makes his home on the east side of Detroit.
