If you have attended a denim mending workshop here - you'll love this class! Elizabeth dives deep into the history and practice of Sashiko Stitching.
A traditional sewing technique from Japan, Sashiko means "little stabs," which perfectly describes the distinctive running stitch that defines Sashiko's style.
During this small group workshop, Elizabeth will teach basic decorative Sashiko Stitching Techniques including turns, stitch spacing, tool use, and more. You will learn about the history of the art and how to use Sashiko in both a decorative and functional way.
Everyone will take home their own Sashiko sampler, and a beginner's kit including thimble, thread, and needles to complete the sampler and continue to develop the art of Sashiko embroidery on their own.
About the instructor:
Elizabeth Royal is a maker, mender, and photographer. She lives in a 1920's fixer upper in Detroit with her two dogs, two cats, and husband. During the day she's an instructional designer but after work you can find her tackling projects in her studio - photography, Kintsugi, and visible mending.

+ All workshops are held at POST, located at 14500 Kercheval Detroit, MI 48215
+ On-street parking is free and plentiful. Our exterior is well-lit and secure.
+ Please arrive on time or a little early to settle in before the class begins. The shop will be open for browsing and buying.
+ Let us know if you have a need for any accommodations that we can plan for in advance. Although we have 2 small steps at the front entry, our side door is wheelchair accessible. Our workshops are held in a production studio setting, but we will attempt to make the space functional for those with physical limitations, special needs, severe allergies, etc. Please be in touch if you have any questions.
+ Upon arrival, please check in with POST staff. All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to the workshop. POST assumes no liability for accidents or injuries. Create at your own risk.
+ All are welcome here. This is a safe space for learning, creating, and connecting. Bigotry, misogyny, rude/inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.
Workshop registration fees are not refundable. If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible. Seats are limited and the projects/materials are carefully planned to accommodate a certain number of students. If you cannot attend and you give us at least 7 days notice, we will issue a credit for the full amount of your registration fee. The credit may be applied towards a workshop of your choosing. The credit is good for a one-time transfer and will expire 90 days after the original workshop date.
If you do not provide us with 7 days notice before cancelling, you will not be given a credit however, your seat may be transferred to a friend. Please let us know if someone will be coming in your place.
If a workshop is cancelled by POST for any reason (weather, illness, etc) we will contact all students and issue refunds for the full amount of the registration fee.
