Join artist Erin Wakeland for a three-week deep dive into the world of paper mâché sculpture. Using cardboard, homemade glue, and paint, students will learn how to create sculptures with recycled materials. This is a beginner level class.
Whether you're interested in making a giant strawberry, an oversized charm, a strange creature, or an object from your imagination, you'll spend three weeks developing and completing a sculpture from start to finish.
Week One: Foundations & Form Building
- Introduction to paper mâché sculpture
- Learn how to strategically cut and shape cardboard
- Building armatures using recycled materials
- Homemade paper mâché paste demonstration
- Practice paper mâché application on a sample form
- Begin constructing individual sculptures
Week Two: Building & Layering
- Continue sculpture construction
- Refine forms and proportions
- Begin paper mâché application
- Troubleshooting structure and stability
- Group feedback and idea sharing
Week Three: Finishing & Painting
- Final paper mâché layers
- Surface refinement and detail work
- Painting techniques and finishing touches
- Documentation and photographs
- Take home your completed sculpture
All materials are provided however, participants are welcome to bring:
- Specific recycled materials they'd like to incorporate
- Reference photos
- Sketchbooks to sketch ideas for their sculpture
- Small found objects for inspiration
About the Instructor:
Erin Wakeland is a visual artist who makes multi-media sculptures, paintings, and accessories. She is interested in objects, trinkets, and the stories they tell about our world. Erin is inspired by the tug between nature and a whimsical, man-made world. A handmade, vibrant, and painterly quality runs throughout her multi-medium work.
