Ink on paper. 12.5 x 19 in.

These words paraphrase John, Viscount Morley, from his treatise On Compromise in 1857. I know the words thanks to a Ben Shahn poster that hung in my grandma's living room when I was a kid.

This is a letterpress print, typeset by hand with vintage wood type and printed by the artist on a Vandercook proofing press. Printed on French Paper Co cardstock.

BEFORE, I WAS NOT A WITCH. BUT NOW I AM ONE

Hand drawn "Half-hanged Mary" lettering, printed in flat gold ink on muscletone white 140lb French Paper stock.

Half-Hanged Mary is Canadian writer Margaret Atwood's tale of patriarchal cruelty and powerful transformation. This dramatic monologue's speaker is Mary Webster, a 17th-century woman hanged for witchcraft in Puritan Massachusetts. Dangling from a tree, choking but not dying, Mary has plenty of time to reflect on the sadistic sexism that got her here—and when she's found alive the next morning, she truly becomes the powerful witch she was falsely accused of being before. This poem first appeared in Atwood's 1995 collection Morning in the Burned House.

Betsy Stecker, the nature-inspired artist behind Big Mitten Linocuts, is an award-winning linoleum printmaker whose work is featured in fine art fairs across the Midwest and in more than a dozen Michigan galleries. She sketches onto linoleum blocks, carves the designs in relief, rolls ink to the carved blocks, and applies pressure to transfer the designs. Betsy's nature-inspired prints come from frequent travels to northern Michigan. Big Mitten Linocuts products on Faire are all high-quality reproduction prints and cards made entirely in Michigan: Betsy is a Michigan artist, the paper is recycled cardstock that is manufactured at a hydropowered plant in southwest Michigan, and her reproduction work is printed by a mom-and-pop printshop near her studio. Big Mitten Linocuts proudly supports The Greening of Detroit, a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by planting trees, providing job training, and involving youth in the education of the natural environment.
