Learn the science behind what makes cocktails work! In this class, Dr. Kevin Peterson will guide attendees through the botanicals of gin.

Gin is a conundrum wrapped in an enigma. While juniper is a requisite part of any gin recipe, a host of other botanicals support juniper’s pine-y-ness, rounding it, sweetening it, shaping and mellowing it. In this class we will explore the roles played by coriander, angelica root, and licorice root. In collaboration with Eastbank Spirits, we’ll taste through custom distillates of these secondary gin botanicals, then try them in a negroni, a gin & tonic, and a gimlet.  If gin is your muse, you won't want to miss this!

  • This workshop is a mix of lecture and hands-on mixing and tasting.
  • All tools and ingredients will be provided.
  • Class includes roughly 3 drinks worth of alcohol.

Be sure to check out Kevin's book - Cocktail Theory: A Sensory Approach to Transcendent Drinks - books are in the shop and will be available to purchase the evening of the workshop.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Peterson's background spans physics, engineering, perfumery, and bar ownership. His new book, Cocktail Theory - A Sensory Approach to Transcendent Drinks, is a detailed look at the theory and philosophy behind the Detroit cocktail bar he co-founded, Castalia, that operates as a perfumery by day, but by night transforms to serve scent-paired drinks.
