Learn how to turn your thoughts, stories, art, or activism into a self-published mini-magazine in this hands-on zine-making workshop. Whether you’re new to zines or already love them, this workshop is all about creativity, community, and DIY expression.

We'll look at a diverse collection of zines and explore their rich history, from punk to protest to personal storytelling, and guide you through the process of planning, designing, printing, and assembling your own zine using simple materials and various formats and binding options. Expect a relaxed, welcoming space with supplies provided, creative prompts to get you started, and time to cut, collage, draw, and create. We’ll print a handful of zines in the workshop with a desktop printer, and we’ll end the workshop with a zine trade so everyone goes home with a collection of zines.

Come make something weird, personal, radical, beautiful – something that’s 100% yours.

All tools and materials will be provided.

About the Instructor:

Melissa Dettloff is a teaching artist in Detroit, making drawings, screen prints, and ceramics at POST and in her home studio. She is the creator of the Goo, a special, squishy being with part of it missing trying to make the world a better place for everyone. First introduced to printmaking as an art student at Wayne State University, Melissa co-owned Ocelot Print Shop, a community screen printing shop in Detroit’s Cass Corridor. In 2020 she co-founded POMPOM (Printmakers of Michigan Printing on Materials), a networking group for printmakers.
