Ceramics Workshop: Beaded Mobiles

(part 1) Saturday October 24th from 10:30am to 1:30pm

(part 2) Saturday October 31st from 10:30am to 1:30pm

Entry Level Class — No experience necessary

Age 14+ (minors must accompany an adult)

Add some whimsy to your home with a hanging mobile wind chime, made by you. Join Barb Gervais to create this customized beauty featuring hand built clay forms, artful textures, colorful glazes, and oh-so-many beads! 

During this beginner-friendly workshop, students will learn some foundational ceramic basics including:

• Hand-building from a clay slab
• Cutting, shaping, and pinching using forms & tools
• Carving & marking to create textures
• Slip & score & smoothing techniques
• How to apply underglaze

Week 1 (3 hour class):

• Students will design and form their own dome and totem pendant from a pre rolled slab. 
• Apply texture and/or carved details to their dome and totem.
  
• Paint underglaze patterns on a selection of bisque fired beads.

Week 2 (3 hour class):

• Students will select various commercial beads to finish their project.
• Barb will guide the group through assembling the mobiles using beads, wire, jewelry tools, pliers, and hanging hardware. 

About the Instructor:

Barb Gervais is an expressive and somewhat experimental ceramic artist based in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. Barb’s love for clay includes designing whimsical ceramics utilizing lots of color and eye-catching additions to her pieces. She specializes in handbuilding both functional and sculptural pieces. What began as a hobby in the education studio at Pewabic Pottery has become a full time pursuit of creative studio time, vending her wares at art fairs, and now teaching workshops at POST.
