Quilting Workshop: The Giant Heart Bag

*This is a Beginner Level workshop - this means that you don't need to know much about sewing but you must know how to thread a machine and wind a bobbin. If you are a total newbie and unsure how to use a sewing machine, you may want to start with our Sewing Machine Essentials workshop.
Make a delightful heart-shaped bag and learn the basics of bag-making in this intro level sewing & quilting workshop. The Giant Heart Bag is a straightforward pattern that will teach bag making beginners all the basics they’ll need to know for future bag projects. Everyone will receive Liz’s Pattern and will create their own unique bag to take home!
You’ll learn:
- Simple quilting skills to create a big impact
- How to apply interfacing
- How to create interior pockets
- Bias binding application
POST will provide a variety of fabric, interfacing, batting, notions, and tools. If you have preferred fabrics, bias tape, and tools of your own, please bring them! See supply list below for specifics.
For this project, we'll be using:
- Fabric for the outside, 1 yard (quilting cotton or canvas, anything you can quilt through)
- Fabric for the lining, 1 yard (quilting cotton)
- Fabric for the handles, ½ yard (quilting cotton or canvas)
- Fabric for the inner pocket (optional), 2 pieces measuring 7 × 8½” (this is a great opportunity to use up some scraps)
- Decor weight interfacing, 2 pieces measuring about 22 x 26” (Pellon 809 Decor Bond Heavy Fusible Interfacing, but Pellon 808 Craft Fuse will work too)
- Batting scraps, 2 pieces measuring 26 × 32”
- 3 yard of ½” double fold bias tape
- Thread for quilting
- Basic sewing supplies such as Iron, Spray bottle with water, Pressing cloth, Basting Spray/Glue, Fabric Scissors, Rotary Cutter, Piecing thread, Marking or pressing tool
Bring your sewing machine if you wish to learn on your own equipment or you may borrow a studio machine. Please select your preference when you checkout.

Liz LePage is a lifelong quilter and educator with a passion for getting people excited about sewing. As a quilt pattern designer, she loves combining simple sewing techniques with in-depth instructions to make sewing accessible to any level of sewist!
