Suzy Berschback uses photographs as a point of departure: each piece begins with an image rooted in landscapes, maps, or everyday environments, but is transformed through a painterly processes. Using wax she softens edges, exaggerates color, and disrupts literal detail to invite emotion to take precedence over accuracy. The photograph illustrations become the underpainting to which she adds oil paint for depth and encaustic beeswax for texture. She explores themes of resilience, and community. Her current focus includes Grosse Pointe, Detroit, Mackinac Island, and Boca Grande, Florida.
