Step into the world of wearable sculpture. In this three-week series, participants will create a paper mâché piece designed to be worn—from masks and crowns to hats, headpieces, and imaginative wearable creations.
We'll explore the possibilities of wearable sculpture, drawing inspiration from fashion + costume design, to your dream dress-up item as a kid. Participants are encouraged to create something whimsical, expressive, strange + beautiful. This is a beginner friendly workshop!
Week One: Concepts & Construction
- Introduction to wearable sculpture and design considerations
- Brainstorming and sketching ideas
- Learn how to build lightweight, wearable structures
- Working with cardboard, recycled materials, and armatures
- Homemade paper mâché paste demonstration
- Begin constructing masks, crowns, hats, or headpieces
- Test fit and make adjustments for comfort and wearability
Week Two: Building & Paper Mâché
- Continue building and refining forms
- Add dimensional elements, texture, and sculptural details
- Apply paper mâché layers
- Explore techniques for creating volume and surface interest
- Individual feedback and troubleshooting
- Prepare pieces for finishing
Week Three: Painting & Embellishing & Photographing
- Final paper mâché layers and touch-ups
- Painting and surface treatments
- Add finishing details and embellishments
- Final fitting and adjustments
- Group photos and wearable portraits
- Take home your completed creation
All materials are provided however, participants are welcome to bring:
- Specific recycled materials they'd like to incorporate
- Reference photos
- Sketchbooks to sketch ideas for their sculpture
- Small found objects for inspiration
About the Instructor:
Erin Wakeland is a visual artist who makes multi-media sculptures, paintings, and accessories. She is interested in objects, trinkets, and the stories they tell about our world. Erin is inspired by the tug between nature and a whimsical, man-made world. A handmade, vibrant, and painterly quality runs throughout her multi-medium work.
