Ceramics Workshop: Glazing Porcelain Bud Vases

Learn all about porcelain decorating techniques as you make a unique bud vase of your own!

In this 3 hour workshop, you will get to choose your vase from a selection of pre-thrown greenware—each designed and hand thrown by Rachel Gervais. With a variety of color underglaze paints at your disposal, Rachel will walk you through glazing techniques as you decorate your chosen piece.

Once your glaze is set, your vase will be loaded into the kiln to be fired. All vases will be ready for pick up 1 week after class when the kiln firing is complete.

About the Instructor:

Rachel Gervais is an artist + educator based in Hamtramck, MI. With a BFA in Ceramics from CCS, Rachel has used her education to fuel her love for craft and share those skills with all ages. She loves exploring the quality of texture and the intimate relationship of holding a cup, bowl, or small vase.

Botanical Collage Workshop: Framed Pressed Flowers

Enjoy some time with your POST pals while we create unique compositions with the natural beauty of locally grown flowers. 

This 2 hour make + take workshop is all about getting creative as you create a botanical collage that reflects your style. We will have a variety of unique dried flowers, ferns, leaves in a wide array of color schemes to choose from. 

Everyone will take home their unique piece, framed in a Mutual Adoration wood frame. Glass and mating is included.

Choose from a selection of handcrafted 11x14" reclaimed wood frames. We'll have a variety of colors, wood stains, and frame widths available to choose from. Please send a note at least one week in advance if you have any special requests.

We welcome and encourage you to bring your own pressed flowers if you feel so inclined.

Dive into the world of abstract collage with multi-media artist, Shug aka Sheri Lee Robinson.

This intensive workshop will have you elbows-deep in various media as you create bold and exciting new work.  Mixed Media Abstract Collage is a fun and liberating art-making process  that will teach how to create something new with the intention of ripping it up in order to give birth to a brand new work of art. This 4 hour workshop will give you plenty of time to explore, create, and complete a comprehensive series of abstract collages to take home and enjoy. Shug will guide you, step by step, through this journey as we dig in and make A LOT of brand new abstract art. 

Aprons, gloves, and all materials/tools/supplies will be provided.

Each attendee will take home completed collages (measuring 18x24") along with the know-how and inspiration to continue making on their own.

Part 2 in our Learn to Crochet series with Rhonda

This intermediate-level class is designed as the next step for students who have some crochet experience, need a refresher, or have taken our other Beginner Crochet Workshops. 

With loads of experience and her contagious enthusiasm for craft, Rhonda will set you on your way to a new hobby! During this workshop, you will practice and repeat a few times to make sure the learning is cemented. Good progress should be made on making one washcloth during class time.

All tools and materials will be provided. Everyone will take home their spa cloths, hooks, and supplies.

About the instructor:

Rhonda Hamborsky has been an O.G. POST pal since we opened back in 2017. She may even be in first place for most workshops attended! Possessing a love for all things fiber, Rhonda learned how to crochet from her grandmother, who taught her using the mirror method. Because Rhonda is left-handed, she will be using that same method to teach. Rhonda always has several projects in process, including weaving, crocheting, embroidery and also recently began learning to knit too.

Screen Printing Workshop: Pet Portraits with Melissa Dettloff

Your pet deserves 15 minutes of fame! And a custom-made portrait!
Learn the basics of screen printing and create a hand illustrated portrait of your favorite furry friend. We'll be using an accessible, non-darkroom method that can easily be replicated at home. Each participant will create an edition of 6 handmade, 8"x10" custom portraits of their own pet using drawing templates and Melissa’s guidance.

Mutual Adoration frames will be available in the shop at a 20% discount for workshop attendees.

We’ll email all registrants with instructions for how to select and send your pet’s photo before class. Nothing fancy needed - high resolution cell phone photos will work fine on newer phone models.

About the Instructor:

Melissa Dettloff is a teaching artist in Detroit, making drawings, screen prints, and ceramics at POST and in her home studio. She is the creator of the Goo, a special, squishy being with part of it missing trying to make the world a better place for everyone. First introduced to printmaking as an art student at Wayne State University, Melissa co-owned Ocelot Print Shop, a community screen printing shop in Detroit’s Cass Corridor. In 2020 she co-founded POMPOM (Printmakers of Michigan Printing on Materials), a networking group for printmakers.

Using Foraged Plants to Create Natural Inks

Create original paintings, book marks, and cards with freshly foraged inks and gain some inspiration for future inky experiments!

Learn how to make natural ink with artist Elizabeth Schmuhl. We'll begin the day outside (so dress for the weather) while we forage for plants. Students are also encouraged to bring plants or other materials from home. Anything can be used to create painting pigments! Back inside, Elizabeth will walk you through the ink-making process using your new finds.

During this 2 hour make + take workshop, Elizabeth will share samples, discuss her process, and demonstrate the ink-making process. Everyone will enjoy a hands-on experience while foraging, experimenting, and painting with freshly created inks.

Students will take home natural inks and several small paintings, book marks, and cards along with the inspiration and know-how to forage and continue creating painting pigments at home.

Aprons and gloves will be provided, but please wear closed-toe shoes and comfy clothing that may get dirty. 

About the Instructor:

Elizabeth Schmuhl is a multidisciplinary artist and the author of several books. Her most recent book, Fishes of the Great Lakes, contains paintings with natural inks made entirely from the Great Lake watershed and materials that surround it. She has taught at the University of Michigan, Art Institute of Chicago’s Oxbow School of Art, Wayne State University, POST, and elsewhere. She lives in Hamtramck + Benton Harbor.

This class is designed for students who have learned basic beginner knitting skills, but have not yet mastered the art of purling or troubleshooting when things go awry. This class is NOT intended for newbies. To learn the basics, check out our beginner knitting workshops.

During this skill-building workshop, Ashley will teach you how to "read" your work. Learn how to troubleshoot  and fix a multitude of problems and missteps!

In class we will be:

• creating a swatch specifically designed to spot and fix mistakes
• examine problems that you are currently facing in your knitting journey

Ashley's love of knitting and fiber arts blossomed at the age of twelve and quickly became her passion. Her goal as a teacher of fiber arts is to cultivate a love of crafting in a way that inspires students to think creatively about the resources surrounding them and to fill the world with beauty while doing tasks that increase mindfulness and independent thinking. She also owns Ashwelle Fiber Works - a hand spun and hand dyed yarn business emphasizing the creation of unique small batch yarns made slowly, thoughtfully, and with respect to the materials used in the process.

Let’s take a look…at ourselves! Artists throughout the centuries have used self-portraits as a means of self-exploration, self-expression, and self-promotion. These artworks often serve as a visual autobiography, capturing the person at a particular moment in time and revealing something about their personality, emotions, and creative process.

Self-portraits can take on various styles and approaches, depending on your intentions and techniques. In this workshop, we will be focusing on the abstract, gestural, loose, intuitive, and surrealist side of capturing our likenesses (or un-likenesses!) Working on canvas and paper, we will employ an array of wet and dry media.

• A brief slideshow presented at the beginning of class will give you some history and insight into the wide world of the self-portrait. 
• All are welcome to attend and no art-making experience is necessary. 
• Aprons, gloves, and all materials/tools/supplies will be provided.

Step into the world of wearable sculpture. In this three-week series, participants will create a paper mâché piece designed to be worn—from masks and crowns to hats, headpieces, and imaginative wearable creations.

We'll explore the possibilities of wearable sculpture, drawing inspiration from fashion + costume design, to your dream dress-up item as a kid. Participants are encouraged to create something whimsical, expressive, strange + beautiful. This is a beginner friendly workshop!

Week One: Concepts & Construction

• Introduction to wearable sculpture and design considerations
• Brainstorming and sketching ideas
• Learn how to build lightweight, wearable structures
• Working with cardboard, recycled materials, and armatures
• Homemade paper mâché paste demonstration
• Begin constructing masks, crowns, hats, or headpieces
• Test fit and make adjustments for comfort and wearability

Week Two: Building & Paper Mâché

• Continue building and refining forms
• Add dimensional elements, texture, and sculptural details
• Apply paper mâché layers
• Explore techniques for creating volume and surface interest
• Individual feedback and troubleshooting
• Prepare pieces for finishing

Week Three: Painting & Embellishing & Photographing

• Final paper mâché layers and touch-ups

Erin Wakeland is a visual artist who makes multi-media sculptures, paintings, and accessories. She is interested in objects, trinkets, and the stories they tell about our world. Erin is inspired by the tug between nature and a whimsical, man-made world. A handmade, vibrant, and painterly quality runs throughout her multi-medium work.

Ceramics Workshop: Critter Dish Trinket Trays

Looking to play with clay while you create a cute and functional dish? This is the workshop for you! Create your own whimsical piece of pottery to use as an incense burner, candle holder, or jewelry tray. Barb will guide you through the project - you just need to bring your imagination!

Everyone will create a small dish (measuring approximately 4-8") from rolled slab clay. Cute little greenware critters such as birds, cats, turtles, and more may be added to create your own magical menagerie.

During this beginner-friendly workshop, students will learn some foundational ceramic basics including:

• Hand-building from a clay slab
• Cutting, shaping, and pinching using forms & pottery tools
• Carving, stamping & marking to create textures
• Slip & score & smoothing techniques
• How to apply underglaze

Once the glaze is set, your pieces will be loaded into the kiln to be fired. All work will be ready for pick up 1-2 weeks after class when the kiln firing is complete. Barb’s love for clay includes designing whimsical ceramics utilizing lots of color and eye-catching additions to her pieces. She specializes in handbuilding both functional and sculptural pieces. What began as a hobby in the education studio at Pewabic Pottery has become a full time pursuit of creative studio time, vending her wares at art fairs, and now teaching workshops at POST.

Ceramics Workshop: Bird Baths

Add some whimsy to your garden while giving the birds and bees the most adorable bath in the neighborhood! Join Barb Gervais to create a ceramic bird bath, customized with artful textures, colorful glazes, and tiny hand-painted birds, bees, and other critters. 

During this beginner-friendly workshop, students will learn some foundational ceramic basics including:

• Hand-building from a clay slab
• Cutting, shaping, and pinching using forms & tools
• Carving & marking to create textures
• Slip & score & smoothing techniques
• How to apply underglaze

Each bird bath will then be glazed by Barb and go through two kiln firings ensuring a proper finish. Your choice of ground stake or hanging chain will be included so it’s ready for your garden! Please note: these pieces will be weather safe for outdoor use, but be sure to bring them inside in the winter.

We will call/email when the projects are ready for pick up (3-4 weeks after class).

Advanced Knitting Workshop: Intro to Stranded Colorwork

In this workshop, you’ll get an introduction to stranded colorwork knitting techniques by knitting a pine tree-pattern coffee cozy. Julia will provide the pattern and guide everyone through the basics of the skill, including how to manage more than one strand of yarn at a time, catching “floats,” and color dominance.

The goal is to make the skill feel approachable!

Materials you’ll need:

• Two skeins of DK-weight yarn in contrasting colors. This is also a good small project for using partial skeins in your stash.

• One set each of size 2.5 and size 5 needles for preferred method of small circumference knitting, such as 9-inch circular needles, double-pointed needles or circular needles for the magic loop technique

• Other basic notions including tapestry needles and stitch markers  

Prerequisites:

*This is an advanced class — Designed for students with a good grasp on basic knitting techniques, but suitable for those who have never done colorwork knitting before. The skills students should already be comfortable with include:

• Casting on and off

• Knit and purl stitches, and working both knits and purls in the same row

• Knitting in the round
