Have you ever wondered how crossword puzzles are made??? In this class you will find out, and learn the basics of creating your own.
Crossword constructing has zero startup costs - so long as you have a computer, and exercises both the analytical and creative sides of your brain.
This workshop will specifically focus on themed puzzles (think New York Times Monday-Thursday). We will cover what makes a viable theme, what revealers are, and share some insight into our brainstorming process. You will leave with all the tools you need to jump in and start writing your own puzzles.
We will also give a brief overview of the puzzle submission process so maybe you can be published in The New York Times, or any number of outlets you may have never even heard of - there is a whole wide world out there!
No experience required, only a love of puzzles and wordgames.
All tools and supplies are included. Everyone will take home the ‘Intro to Constructing’ presentation and a ton of knowledge.
About the Instructors:
Sala and Emily are friends turned writing partners. Both as collaborators and individually, Emily and Sala have had puzzles published in The New York Times, LA Times, USA Today, AVCX, Andrew McMeel's Universal Syndicate, Apple News+, Defector, and Puzzmo. They love weaving the spirit of the city through their puzzles, and wanted to create something made uniquely for Detroiters. In 2025 they released their first book Block Party: Detroit Edition, which is sold throughout the city - including POST!
