This crochet hat workshop will focus on creating red beanie-style caps topped with a braided tassel, using a variation of the “Melt the ICE” pattern, created by Minneapolis-based knitter Paul Neary. Inspired by the original Norwegian “nisselue” hats, these are meant to be worn as a symbol of resistance and solidarity. POST will donate all proceeds to Detroit-based nonprofits actively working to support our local immigrant community.
Inspired by a 1940’s Norwegian pattern, these red hats were worn to protest Nazi occupation. For Norwegians, the hat was meant to be "distinctively non-violent". To quote Mats Tangestuen, director of the Resistance Museum in Oslo, "It was used in the period of the war where everything looked very dark - the main purpose of it was just to keep up morale, keep up hope, and not descend into hopelessness and apathy."
Students will make a solid beginning to the hat and may complete half of it in class.
All materials are included. POST will provide each attendee:
About the instructor:
Rhonda Hamborsky has been an O.G. POST pal since we opened back in 2017. She may even be in first place for most workshops attended! Possessing a love for all things fiber, Rhonda learned how to crochet from her Grandmother, who taught her using the mirror method. Because Rhonda is left-handed, she will be using that same method to teach. Rhonda always has several projects in process, including weaving, crocheting, embroidery and also recently began learning to knit too.
