Intermediate class — Designed for students with a good grasp on basic knitting techniques, but suitable for those who have never done cable knitting before. Students should already be comfortable with casting on and off, knit and purl stitches and working both knits and purls in the same row.
In this workshop, you will create a cable-knit swatch using the rope cabling technique. Julia will guide everyone through the basics of the skill, including right and left crossing, the use of a cable needle, and fixing mis-crossed cables. The goal is to make the skill feel approachable.
Students should bring their own yarn and needles to ensure they use materials they’re comfortable with. Any weight of yarn can be used for this class, though more substantial weights such as DK, Aran or worsted may be easier to learn the new skill on. Lace-weight yarn alone is not recommended.
Circular needles are recommended for this class, as the instruction for creating the swatch will imitate the circular knitting process. The size needed will vary based on the yarn chosen by each student. It’s recommended for students who may already have cable needles to bring them, though extras will be provided. Students should also bring basic notions including scissors, tapestry needles and stitch markers if desired.
About the instructor:
Julia Cardi is a knitter and crocheter based in Detroit. Her love for knitting began as a solitary hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic (the scarf of dubious quality she made from a kit as a nine-year-old notwithstanding), but what hooked her is the community fiber arts naturally creates, and the respite it provides from her day job.
