Ceramics Workshop: Customizing Functional Puff Pipes with Mitch Segall of Central Ceramics Co.

Join us for an adults-only POST-after-dark session! 

Spend a chill evening with friends while you customize your own unique bowl. With a variety of colorful underglaze paints at your fingertips, Mitch will guide you through glazing techniques as you decorate your fully functional puff pipe.

We will have a variety of prepared blank pieces for you to choose from. Please see photos as examples. Please note that shapes and sizes vary, based on available supply.

Once your glaze is set, your pipe will be loaded into the kiln to be fired. All pipes will be ready for pick up 1-2 weeks after class when the kiln firing is complete. We will call and/or email everyone when the projects are ready for pick up. 

About the Instructor:

Mitch Segall is a native Michigander, a proud MSU alum, and the founder of Central Ceramics Co. He has been working with clay for nearly 20 years and teaching for over 10 years. Mitch has apprenticed in a number of pottery studios and is the manager of Pewabic Pottery’s gallery shop. He loves exploring shape, texture, and color, and stretching those elements within the limitations of clay. Mitch’s current body of work reflects the aesthetics and inspirations discovered during his time living in Central America.

Drop-In Workshop: WIRE WRAP RINGS

Led by artist Trice Clark, also known as Kraft Doll and Detroit’s Handy Woman.

During this quickie make + take workshop, you’ll design a trio of unique gold-tone wire rings, and even learn how to incorporate beads into your creations. Create your own perfect set of three rings to stack or share with friends!

All supplies, tools, and hardware will be provided. Just bring your creativity or at least an open mind, ready to be inspired!

Saturday October 18th

This drop-in project does not have a specific start and stop time. Just drop-in anytime during the workshop. Please note that most folks will need 30-40 minutes to complete this project so please plan accordingly.

About the Instructor:

Trice Clark is a mom, maker, and all-around DIY enthusiast. As a self-taught artist she has dabbled in different mediums from woodworking to welding. Using these skills Clark has built activations for local Detroit music festivals, parties, and brand events. Prior to the pandemic her do it yourself workshop, Designer Hack, guided attendees through recreating high-end trends in accessories and home decor for a fraction of the cost. She began making jewelry in 5th grade and exhibited her work in Michigan Fashion Week, Fashion Massacre, and during Detroit’s Month of Design. Whether its hosting classes or creating installations Trice Clark always sets out to make enjoying art an interactive experience.

Ceramics Workshop: Critter Dish Trinket Trays

Looking to play with clay while you create a cute and functional dish? This is the workshop for you! Create your own whimsical piece of pottery to use as an incense burner, candle holder, or jewelry tray. Barb will guide you through the project - you just need to bring your imagination!

Everyone will create a small dish (measuring approximately 4-8") from rolled slab clay. Cute little greenware critters such as birds, cats, turtles, and more may be added to create your own magical menagerie.

During this beginner-friendly workshop, students will learn some foundational ceramic basics including:

• Hand-building from a clay slab
• Cutting, shaping, and pinching using forms & pottery tools
• Carving, stamping & marking to create textures
• Slip & score & smoothing techniques
• How to apply underglaze

Once the glaze is set, your pieces will be loaded into the kiln to be fired. All work will be ready for pick up 1-2 weeks after class when the kiln firing is complete. We will call/email to let you know when things are ready for pick up. POST can also ship your project if desired. Please inquire about shipping when you come to class. 

About the Instructor:

Barb Gervais is an expressive and somewhat experimental ceramic artist based in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. Barb’s love for clay includes designing whimsical ceramics utilizing lots of color and eye-catching additions to her pieces. She specializes in handbuilding both functional and sculptural pieces. What began as a hobby in the education studio at Pewabic Pottery has become a full time pursuit of creative studio time, vending her wares at art fairs, and now teaching workshops at POST.

Sewing Workshop: Pumpkin Set

If you enjoy the crisp autumn air and the crunch of leaves underfoot, you will love hanging out in the POST studio and creating this Pumpkin Snack Mat and Coaster set! To truly get into the seasonal spirit, we will enjoy two Fall inspired cocktails while creating our project.

This pretty pumpkin set is an easy project that will introduce you to a simple free motion embroidery technique without needing a special sewing foot or prior experience. All tools, materials, and supplies will be provided in class. 

Everyone will take home 1 mat, 2 coasters, cocktail recipes, and sewing pattern. Extra fabric will be available to make more coasters/mats if time permits.

Please bring your own sewing machine if you wish to learn on your own equipment or you may borrow a studio machine. Please select your preference when you checkout.

About the Instructor:

Donna Killeen is the owner and creator of Detroit Apron Company. She enjoys working with natural linen and cotton fabrics to create aprons, hand towels, and market bags. Donna has been teaching at POST since 2018!

Basketry Workshop: Pine Needle Rim Baskets

Join this hands-on workshop to create a square-to-round basket with an intricately woven pine needle rim. This class is perfect for absolute beginners or anyone wanting to develop their basket weaving skills. 

Basket weaving is historically a very practical craft along the same traditions as pottery and woodworking. This craft is perfect for modern crafters though. It is functional, beautiful, and sustainable. By utilizing natural materials, you can create lovely pieces to use in a variety of ways around the home. 

Your finished basket will measure approximately 9x9x6 inches.

All materials and tools are provided.

About the Instructor:

Deb VanderLinde is a lifelong basket weaver and teacher. She has three published basket pattern books (The Basketmak’r) and has also published a pattern magazine (Just Patterns Magazine in the 1990s). As a professional music educator now in retirement, Deb loves teaching basket classes again and supporting people as they learn a new craft. 

Concrete Planter Workshop: Spooky Succulent Gardens with Melissa West (Studio M West)

Learn how to create spooky fairy garden accessories with air-dry clay, then curate your own succulent garden. Melissa's handcrafted concrete planters make the perfect foundation to add plants, rocks, and oh-so-many whimsical touches!

Melissa West is an artist based in Dearborn, holding a BFA in painting. After graduating, she unearthed a passion for creating 3D objects. Over the past six years, she has explored the versatility of concrete, crafting one-of-a-kind planters and home decor pieces. Combining her love for plants with her creative spirit, Melissa is excited to bring her garden workshops to POST.

Jewelry Workshop with Julie from Fate & Coincidence

Spend some time with friends in the POST studio, learning and creating our favorite thing…jewelry!!!

During this 3 hour hands-on workshop, Julie will cover the basics of jewelry design and assemblage. She’ll bring in her gorgeous collection of new and vintage beads to inspire your creativity as you build your custom set. Learn her process of design, lay out, material selection, assembly, and finishing using jump rings, flat elements and jewelry pliers. 

Each attendee will take home one completed pair of earrings and a beaded necklace along with the know-how and inspiration to continue making on their own.

About the Instructor:

Julie Broekman (formerly Rudziensky) was born and raised in Michigan. She is an automotive color and material designer by day and a jewelry designer/maker by night. Her jewelry line, Fate & Coincidence, is a mix of boho-modern style that is sold in over 50 stores around the country. She is a lover of wildlife, nature, and color.

Collage Workshop with Shug (Sheri Lee Robinson)

Dive into the world of abstract collage with multi-media artist, Shug aka Sheri Lee Robinson.

This intensive workshop will have you elbows-deep in various media as you create bold and exciting new work.  Mixed Media Abstract Collage is a fun and liberating art-making process  that will teach how to create something new with the intention of ripping it up in order to give birth to a brand new work of art. This 4 hour workshop will give you plenty of time to explore, create, and complete a comprehensive series of abstract collages to take home and enjoy. Shug will guide you, step by step, through this journey as we dig in and make A LOT of brand new abstract art. 

Aprons, gloves, and all materials/tools/supplies will be provided.

Each attendee will take home completed collages (measuring 18x24") along with the know-how and inspiration to continue making on their own.

Two Day Intro to Upholstery Workshop: Dining Chair Seat Cushions

This beginner-friendly introduction to upholstery promises to transform you from an upcycling dreamer into a confident furniture DIYer! 

Day 1 is all about the bones. We’ll start with simple chairs* in need of new seat cushions. Please bring a chair with you - it doesn’t have to be fancy - any old chair will do. We will go through the steps needed to tear apart old upholstery, remove old foam/batting, and learn how to assess furniture pieces based on age and condition. Repairs will be made as needed for each individual piece.

Day 2 is for rebuilding. We will be making our chairs better than ever! Get hands-on experience in choosing fabrics, working with foam and dacron, while you learn the fundamentals to create comfortable and structurally sound seating. 

Everyone will leave with their fully refreshed chair and the inspiration to go out and conquer more furniture refinishing projects!

* See the photos for chair inspiration. If you have a chair that you’re not sure fits the class, feel free to email us a photo in advance. We can help advise. As this is an intro class, start simple! A solid wooden chair with only seat upholstery will be best. Save your antique armchair for the advanced session, coming up later this year. If you do not have a chair, we will have some extras at POST. 

Hand tools, power tools, hardware, foam, batting, fabric, and all necessary supplies will be provided. We have a wide array of upholstery fabric to choose from but you are encouraged to bring your own as well. There will be a week between the two sessions to finalize your fabric choices.

Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that you can get a bit dirty in for this workshop. Refrain from wearing loose clothing or anything that dangles Tie up long hair, scarves, and jewelry. Gloves, eye protection, and aprons will be provided.

Basketry Workshop: Sleigh Baskets

This 4+ hour intro level class will focus on a sleigh basket perfectly designed to spruce up your holiday decor. Use the basket to display holiday ornaments, scented pine cones, little gifts, or dolls. This would make a very special gift!

The basket features a handcrafted oak base. Some color choices will be offered but note that color options may vary. The basket measures approximately 15” Long x 9” Wide x 6” Deep. Sleigh base is 20” Long.

All materials and tools are provided.

Just in time for the holiday season...create your own colorful tree, perfect for lighting up your winter decor. The cone-shaped trees may be glazed in various colors, made with an array of textures, and personalized with endless shapes, cut-outs, and toppers. Barb will guide you through the project - you just need to bring your imagination!

Everyone will create a tree (measuring approximately 8-10" tall) with a coordinating tray. The small tray can be used to hold a candle, turning your tree into a lovely luminary.

If you’ve never used a sewing machine or simply need a refresher, this class will build your sewing confidence!

Our Sewing Machine Essentials workshop will introduce you to the basics of using a sewing machine including threading the machine, creating a bobbin, stitch selections,  and sewing seams. Your new knowledge will be put to practice with a simple envelope pillow cover that you will complete in this class.

All tools, materials, and supplies will be provided in class.

Knitting Workshop: Intro to Colorwork

Sunday November 2nd from 10am to 1pm

Intermediate Level Class

Intermediate class — Designed for students with a good grasp on basic knitting techniques, but suitable for those who have never done colorwork before. Students should already be comfortable with casting on and off, knit and purl stitches and working both knits and purls in the same row.

In this workshop, you will create a knitted swatch made up of two colors using the stranded colorwork technique. Julia will guide everyone through the basics of the skill, such as how to manage more than one strand of yarn at once, catching “floats,” and color dominance. She’ll also explain pitfalls to avoid to ease the learning curve of colorwork knitting. The goal is to make the skill feel approachable and unintimidating.

Students should bring their own materials to ensure they use yarn and needles they’re comfortable with.  Any weight of yarn can be used for this class, though more substantial weights such as DK, Aran or worsted may be easier to learn the new skill on. Lace-weight yarn alone is not recommended. Circular needles are recommended for this class, as the instruction for creating the swatch will imitate the circular knitting process. The size needed will vary based on the yarn chosen by each student.

Julia Cardi is a knitter and crocheter based in Detroit. Her love for knitting began as a solitary hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic (the scarf of dubious quality she made from a kit as a nine-year-old notwithstanding), but what hooked her is the community fiber arts naturally creates, and the respite it provides from her day job.

Intuitive Self Portraits with Shug (Sheri Lee Robinson)

Let’s take a look…at ourselves! Artists throughout the centuries have used self-portraits as a means of self-exploration, self-expression, and self-promotion. These artworks often serve as a visual autobiography, capturing the person at a particular moment in time and revealing something about their personality, emotions, and creative process.

Self-portraits can take on various styles and approaches, depending on your intentions and techniques. In this workshop, we will be focusing on the abstract, gestural, loose, intuitive, and surrealist side of capturing our likenesses (or un-likenesses!) Working on canvas and paper, we will employ an array of wet and dry media.

• A brief slideshow presented at the beginning of class will give you some history and insight into the wide world of the self-portrait. 
• All are welcome to attend and no art-making experience is necessary. 
• Aprons, gloves, and all materials/tools/supplies will be provided.
• Each attendee will take home multiple works of art, along with the know-how and inspiration to continue making on their own.

Two Day Ceramics Workshop: Grater Bowls

Love making your own dressings and marinades but sick of chopping that sticky garlic and those finicky herbs? Grater bowls come equipped with a garlic grater, herb stripper, and a convenient spout. Local artist and pottery maverick, Mitch Segall offers a unique opportunity to learn ceramic bowl crafting with some special tools built in that’ll make your time in the kitchen fun and easy. 

During this two-part workshop, you’ll learn all about handbuilding and glazing stoneware. By the end of class, you’ll understand how to properly coil build with clay so that the resulting piece is structurally sound. You'll also learn how to imprint textures and add shapes to create something entirely unique.

When you return for the second date, you'll learn how to apply glaze to your bisque fired bowl using a variety of glazing techniques. 

What activities will you experience?

• Building coils into a bowl form
• Smoothing and blending techniques
• Scoring and slipping to attach pieces
• Paddling technique

Dive into the world of art therapy with multi-media artist, Shug aka Sheri Lee Robinson. Take a journey into the compelling art-making technique known as Neurographic Art for an inspiring afternoon in the POST studio!

Neurographic Art is an accessible and rewarding form of art-making that can nurture creativity, mindfulness, and emotional well-being in students of all ages and abilities. By encouraging free expression, eliminating the fear of mistakes, and tapping into the power of the right brain, neurographic art empowers the exploration of artistic potential and self-discovery.  This technique is a structured yet free-flowing method of art-making that centers on creating organic, neuron-like lines and shapes that can be colored in with paint, pencils or markers to create a soothing and meaningful abstract composition. Relaxing, easy and fun for all.

Aprons, gloves, and all materials/tools/supplies will be provided.

Each attendee will take home at least one completed work of art, along with the know-how and inspiration to continue making on their own.

This make & take class is for the complete beginner. Ashley will be teaching the group about the tools and fibers used in knitting, and how those tools are used to create fabrics of varying density. She will guide you through basic knitting techniques to begin your very own scarf! Ashley has many tips & tricks including visual aids and simple rhymes to help students learn the ancient craft of knitting.

Everyone will take home a set of knitting needles, yarn, instructional handout, and their in-progress piece. All materials will be provided. We'll have a variety of colorful yarn to choose from.

Ashley's love of knitting and fiber arts blossomed at the age of twelve and quickly became her passion. Her goal as a teacher of fiber arts is to cultivate a love of crafting in a way that inspires students to think creatively about the resources surrounding them and to fill the world with beauty while doing tasks that increase mindfulness and independent thinking. Craft a very useful bag while you become best buds with your sewing machine!

We'll have a variety of fabrics to choose from, ranging in colors, patterns and texture. Students will also have access to a large stash of ribbon, rope, cords, and toggles to finish off their bags.

Courtney will be here to guide you step-by-step through the kiln firing process to create a beautiful one-of-a-kind enamel dish. Learn how to fire enamel on copper and choose from a wide array of colors and textures. The small trinket dish measures approximately 4 x 3 inches - perfect for holding jewelry and other treasures!

All supplies are provided, including a practice piece you may turn into a keychain. No experience required! Let your creativity run wild.

It's a Wardrobe Mending Double Feature Day in the POST studio! Join us for Denim Mending, Knit Mending, or do both workshops to receive a little discount!

10am-1pm KNITS The morning session will focus on Needle Felting. Whether you’re looking to mend moth holes, fill in worn elbows, repair small snags, or simply want to add some pizzazz to that drab old sweater - you are going to love Needle Felting! This workshop will introduce you to visible and invisible mending techniques for use on most knits. Needle felting works well on wool, cashmere, alpaca, and most cotton, acrylic, silk, and linens blends too. A variety of roving and fabrics will be provided for practice. We encourage you to bring in your own knits as well. Everyone will take home a needle felting kit and a take-home booklet.

1pm-2pm LUNCH You'll have time for a quick break. Please bring a lunch or join us on a run to local favorite, The Sprout House. The POST CAFE will also be open all day, serving drinks and treats.

2pm-5pm DENIM The afternoon session will focus on repairing denim staples with the centuries old art of Sashiko and Boro mending. Everyone will try various stitches and learn how to choose techniques that will make a strong, long-lasting repair. We’ll cover best practices with a variety of denim and linen fabrics available for patching and stabilizing your pieces. Please bring your own clothing to mend and any preferred patching fabric you may have. Jeans, chinos, denim skirts/jackets, chambray shirts all work great! Everyone will recieve sashiko needles, threads, floss, and a take-home booklet.

Join us for a 3-hour embroidery extravaganza while we work on this amazing sampler together. Students will learn a variety of techniques including french knots, back, satin, and running stitches.

This ready-to-stitch sampler by artist Rebecca Ringquist is preprinted on cotton quilting fabric. POST provides the thread, needles, hoop, and backing fabric to get you going!

Everyone will take home their in-progress sampler, supplies, an instructional zine, and the know-how to complete the project.

About the designer:

Rebecca Ringquist is a Portland-based visual artist and designer. Her stitched drawings on fabric explore issues of identity through thinly veiled metaphors utilizing old fashioned imagery and double entendres. She learned how to embroider in college in a feminist art history class, and has been inspired by the history of American needlework ever since. Approaching the technique of embroidery as a way of drawing, Ringquist has taught hundreds of people new ways of making marks on fabric through classes and workshops around the country.

KNIT NITE is not exclusive to knitters, we just like the alliteration!

Celebrate the season with a customized ceramic ornament, perfect for gifting!

In this drop in workshop, you will get to choose an ornament from a wide array of shapes. With a variety of color underglaze paints at your disposal, Rachel will walk you through glazing techniques as you decorate your chosen piece.

Once you have painted on your glaze, your ornament will be loaded into the kiln to be fired. All ornaments will be ready for pick up 1-2 weeks after class. We will call/email everyone when they are ready. POST can also ship ornaments directly to recipients.

All supplies will be provided including hangers, colorful ribbons, and gift boxes.

Jewelry artist, Courtney Fischer will be here to guide you step-by-step through the process of creating colorful pendants, earrings, and more! Make your own beautiful one-of-a-kind kiln fire enamel jewelry in the POST studio.

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to fire opaque enamel onto copper and assemble complete pieces using chain, jump rings, and earring hooks. All tools and materials are provided.

After completing a practice piece, you may choose to make a necklace or a pair of earrings. You can even turn your practice piece into a keychain or pendant. Choose from a wide array of colorful enamel and let your creativity run wild!

Dive into the world of abstract collage with multi-media artist, Shug aka Sheri Lee Robinson.

This intensive workshop will have you elbows-deep in various media as you create bold and exciting new work.  Mixed Media Abstract Collage is a fun and liberating art-making process  that will teach how to create something new with the intention of ripping it up in order to give birth to a brand new work of art. This 4 hour workshop will give you plenty of time to explore, create, and complete a comprehensive series of abstract collages to take home and enjoy. Shug will guide you, step by step, through this journey as we dig in and make A LOT of brand new abstract art. 

Aprons, gloves, and all materials/tools/supplies will be provided.

Each attendee will take home completed collages (measuring 18x24") along with the know-how and inspiration to continue making on their own.

Celebrate the holidays while adding a colorful chandelier of paper flowers, string, and other ephemera  to your home by making a traditional Polish Pajaki!

Pronounced Pah-yonk-ee, this traditional craft is created by the women of Poland at times of celebration - weddings, holidays, christenings, or springtime.

We’ll work with metal hoops, paper straws, twine, paper flowers, pom poms, hand marbled wooden beads, and much more to create a one-of-a-kind decorative ‘chandelier’ that roughly measures 12” round x 24” long. These are traditionally hung around holidays as a decoration for the home, but can also just be hung from the ceiling year around.

Robyn will teach everyone to craft a few variations of classic cocktail recipes using fresh and interesting ingredients. While we're sipping our drinks, Kellie will take everyone through cookie decorating 101. Learn how to use royal icing to create the perfect cookie canvas.

Students will taste, practice, and gain confidence using pro-level specialty tools. Take home recipes cards and the know-how to step up your baking and bartending skills at home. You'll take home cookies too (if you don't just break down and eat them all during the festivities)!

What's better than a market tote bag? A reversible market tote bag! What's even better than that? One that you have made yourself!!

In this sewing skill builder class you will learn to construct a reversible lined market tote while you advance your sewing skills even further. Using a sewing machine, this bag will be constructed using more elements than my previous bag workshops. These elements include:

• cutting out the bag and lining using a pattern
• making your own handles for the bag
• applying a pocket
• making gussets and lining the bag

It may sound like a lot but you will come away satisfied with your new skills as a beginner.  

* No pattern sewing experience is necessary, however you should know your way around a sewing machine. This is a great class for students who have taken our Sewing Machine Essentials workshop or have some (even minimal) experience sewing on a machine.

All supplies, notions, and fabric will be provided, including some specialty holiday prints. If you would like to bring your own lining fabric, please choose a mid weight cotton, such as a quilting cotton, ¾ of a yard.

Slings, Fanny Packs, Bum Bags, Belt Bags, whatever you call them, these crossbody carry-alls are always in fashion for good reason! Endlessly versatile and adjustable, these bags can be worn so many ways and made in so many fabrics. We have perfected a super pattern that is easy to learn and features a lined interior, secure zipper closure, inner pocket, and an adjustable strap.

Ceramics Workshop: Critter Dish Trinket Trays

Looking to play with clay while you create a cute and functional dish? This is the workshop for you! Create your own whimsical piece of pottery to use as an incense burner, candle holder, or jewelry tray. Barb will guide you through the project - you just need to bring your imagination!

Everyone will create a small dish (measuring approximately 4-8") from rolled slab clay. Cute little greenware critters such as birds, cats, turtles, and more may be added to create your own magical menagerie.

During this beginner-friendly workshop, students will learn some foundational ceramic basics including:

• Hand-building from a clay slab
• Cutting, shaping, and pinching using forms & pottery tools
• Carving, stamping & marking to create textures
• Slip & score & smoothing techniques
• How to apply underglaze

Once the glaze is set, your pieces will be loaded into the kiln to be fired. All work will be ready for pick up 1-2 weeks after class when the kiln firing is complete. We will call/email to let you know when things are ready for pick up. POST can also ship your project if desired. Please inquire about shipping when you come to class.

Barb Gervais is an expressive and somewhat experimental ceramic artist based in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. Barb’s love for clay includes designing whimsical ceramics utilizing lots of color and eye-catching additions to her pieces. She specializes in handbuilding both functional and sculptural pieces. What began as a hobby in the education studio at Pewabic Pottery has become a full time pursuit of creative studio time, vending her wares at art fairs, and now teaching workshops at POST.

Learn how to add pockets to your garments!

Whether it's a designer dress, a vintage jacket, or some cute fast-fashion pjs, we all have items that would be so much better if only they had pockets. Join us for a day of major wardrobe upgrades while we learn how to add in-seam, apron, and patch pockets to our favorite garments. 

Everyone will take home a copy of Jess Driscoll's book The Magic of Pockets: Why Your Clothes Don't Have Good Pockets and How to Fix That so that you can keep going on your pocket-adding mission!

No sewing experience is needed. POST will supply all tools, supplies, and notions. 

• Please bring at least one of two pieces of clothing in need of pockets.
• You may want to bring some fabric too. Think coordinating fabrics to match with your piece, adding a pop of color, or fun patterns for adding contrast and interest. 
• POST has a robust stash of fabrics to choose from as well. Solids and patterns in various weights will be available to use and Angela will help to select the best options.

Macrame + Reclaimed Wood Hanging Shelf Workshop

Learn various macrame techniques to create a functional and very beautiful craft. Using various knots and twists, students will turn a wooden board into a decorative hanging shelf. We'll provide sturdy macrame rope in a wide array of colors. 

Select a unique piece of reclaimed wood from the Mutual Adoration wood shop to complete your project. The boards have been sanded, stained, and finished specifically for the macrame hangers. Decorative and utilitarian! 

Everyone will take home a handcrafted wood + macrame shelf, ready to hang!

Knitting Workshop: Intro to Cableknit

Sunday November 30th from 10am to 1pm

Intermediate Level Class

Intermediate class — Designed for students with a good grasp on basic knitting techniques, but suitable for those who have never done cable knitting before. Students should already be comfortable with casting on and off, knit and purl stitches and working both knits and purls in the same row.

In this workshop, you will create a cable-knit swatch using the rope cabling technique. Julia will guide everyone through the basics of the skill, including right and left crossing, the use of a cable needle, and fixing mis-crossed cables. The goal is to make the skill feel approachable.

Students should bring their own yarn and needles to ensure they use materials they’re comfortable with.  Any weight of yarn can be used for this class, though more substantial weights such as DK, Aran or worsted may be easier to learn the new skill on. Lace-weight yarn alone is not recommended. 

Circular needles are recommended for this class, as the instruction for creating the swatch will imitate the circular knitting process. The size needed will vary based on the yarn chosen by each student. It’s recommended for students who may already have cable needles to bring them, though extras will be provided. Students should also bring basic notions including scissors, tapestry needles and stitch markers if desired.

Julia Cardi is a knitter and crocheter based in Detroit. Her love for knitting began as a solitary hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic (the scarf of dubious quality she made from a kit as a nine-year-old notwithstanding), but what hooked her is the community fiber arts naturally creates, and the respite it provides from her day job.

Two-Day Ceramics Workshop: Making Goos with Melissa Dettloff

Just in time for the holiday season...create your own colorful tree, perfect for lighting up your winter decor. The cone-shaped trees may be glazed in various colors, made with an array of textures, and personalized with endless shapes, cut-outs, and toppers. Barb will guide you through the project - you just need to bring your imagination!

Everyone will create a tree (measuring approximately 8-10" tall) with a coordinating tray. The small tray can be used to hold a candle, turning your tree into a lovely luminary.

During this beginner-friendly workshop, students will learn some foundational ceramic basics including:

• Hand-building from a clay slab
• Cutting, shaping, and pinching using forms & pottery tools
• Carving, stamping & marking to create textures
• Slip & score & smoothing techniques
• How to apply underglaze

Once the glaze is set, your pieces will be loaded into the kiln to be fired. All work will be ready for pick up 1-2 weeks after class when the kiln firing is complete. We will call/email to let you know when things are ready for pick up. POST can also ship your project if desired. Please inquire about shipping when you come to class. 

About the Instructor:

Barb Gervais is an expressive and somewhat experimental ceramic artist based in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. Barb’s love for clay includes designing whimsical ceramics utilizing lots of color and eye-catching additions to her pieces. She specializes in handbuilding both functional and sculptural pieces. What began as a hobby in the education studio at Pewabic Pottery has become a full time pursuit of creative studio time, vending her wares at art fairs, and now teaching workshops at POST.

Come hang out with your POST pals for some fibers and textile crafting. Bring your knitting, crochet, needlework, sewing, or other fibers project along with any tools and supplies needed. This is a free, fun, loosely organized, crafting party with a talented crowd of pros and beginners alike. Need some help with your project? Chances are someone here can offer guidance, inspiration, or at the very least will commiserate with your frustrations.
